Being grateful is a wonderful thing, especially if it is expressed to the person who is the object of that gratitude through a kind word or with a gift.

Today, despite the widespread economic challenges and personal problems that almost everyone faces on some level, there are a lot of good reasons to be thankful. Sometimes, it is the small acts of kindness that are most treasured - and that should be rewarded.

Increasingly, people are finding that they owe a debt of gratitude not to the government or some ideology, but rather in a much more immediate and simple place: to those key people around them.

Yes, it is the people in our lives, day to day, who in a sense matter most to us. They have the largest influence over the range of choices we can make. It is those with whom we come in closest contact that can improve our lives, in ways both small and large.

If you have someone in your life whom you would like to thank for doing you (or someone else) a good turn or for just "being them," here are 3 tips for choosing unique thank you gifts:

1. Thank you gifts show sincere appreciation: The gift you choose should be sincere. Meaning: it should in no way take away from the raw feeling of appreciation that you feel. Some of us these days have trouble expressing these types of raw emotions because it makes us feel vulnerable. However, if you have found the right gift, the gift should speak on your behalf.

2. Your gift choice should show off your gratitude, not your greatness: Remember, the point of your gift is to show your gratitude to this person who has helped you out. The point is NOT to show how great you are for thinking of them. In short, you want your gift choice to highlight them, not you.

3. The best thank you gift is one that highlights the recipient's own interests: Think for a moment about this person's interests. You can get clues about this by looking into how he or she spends their time on weekends and in the evenings - or whenever they have free time. Your gift should reflect and accentuate these interests, or at least be inspired by them.

Follow these 3 tips as you find unique thank you gifts that are sure to clearly express your feelings of gratitude for this special person.
