Wicked - The Musical has taken New York by storm since it opened on October 30, 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre. The show is considered to be the prequel to the ever successful and hugely popular "Wizard Of Oz." Wicked Broadway tickets are among the best sellers of any other show in New York since it's opening. In the first year the production raked in a huge $56 million dollars gross at the box office. With a mix of intriguing storyline, popularity around the original "Wizard Of Oz" and a great musical score this tale of "Before we went over the rainbow" has certainly grabbed theater patrons attention.

The Story Of Wicked

The story focuses mainly on the two characters Elphaba and Galinda who eventually will become the wicked witch of the West and Glinda the Good. This production tells of these two characters before these were the path they would take. At this time in the storyline they are just young girls who are attending Shiz University and have been thrown together as roommates. These young women start out with a difference of opinion and conflict making it appear as if they despise on another. Through the show they seem to make a bond and a friendship develops. The personalities of the women are drastically different in every way. The only thing they share in common is the same love interest which creates a bit of tension. The real amazing part of the development is seeing how Elphaba was not so much wicked as she was different and misunderstood. She had a different look and approach which made her not fit in with the other students and this is something it appears the wizard latched onto and used for his personal needs and agenda.

The production values are quite lavish and provide a dazzling visual experience. The actors do a phenomenal job and the first year the musical was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, in which it grabbed three including Best Actress. Wicked was nominated for Best Musical but was unable to take it home do to the outstanding work of Avenue Q which was also a new musical for the same year. Stephen Schwartz wrote the score for the show and in 2005 the cast recording of this hit musical won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album
