The Latest in Books

Books are a vast source of knowledge. It is generally accepted that the more you read, the more intelligent you become. Read ten books on any one subject and you are pretty much an expert on that subject.

The problem is that reading takes time. Time spent reading is a singular focus activity. In other words, when you read, you can do nothing else. It requires your complete attention. Now don't get me wrong, reading is well worth the time and effort., but wouldn't it be great if somehow we could do something else while we read.

One of the more recent solutions to this problem was books-on -assette. You could listen to a book while you drove the car or, if you had a portable cassette player, you could listen while you jogged or excercised or cleaned house. Cassettes have pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur and have been replaced by the CD. Again, great for the car or even at home on the stereo while you do other things. Portable CD players increase mobility, but are subject to skip and can be akward.

Now, the medium of choice is an mp3 player or an iPod. The devices are small and very portable. They hold vast amounts of music and now video as well. The untapped advantage of these devices appears to be audiobooks. Audio books can be loaded to the devices and listed to anywhere, under just about any circumstances. There is now an audio book of just about every book released. Major publishers release an audiobook almost immediately after the printed copy.

If you have a personal device such as an iPod or any mp3 player, you need to check out audio books. Many are free and will allow you to "read" a book and increase your knowledge while you do other things.
