The writer tells a story from Montresor's view, as though trying to show the way of thinking the murderer had. The whole story is based on murderer's view perspective. Though it still does not approve his actions. Montresor is proud of successfully hiding the crime.
So many years have passed since that horrible night, but no one found out the real truth. He wasn't punished for that, he was never given a lesson of what is right and what is, definitely, not worth doing.
Fortunato was drunk that night and Montresor took an advantage of it. Fortunato was seduced by a new bottle of wine that killer has just bought, it was called "Amontillado". This, probably, played an important role in tempting the victim, as Fortunato was inclined to alcohol. Simply saying he paved his way himself, he led himself to this disaster. It is for sure that Fortunato had no idea about Montresor's anger and expected no dirty tricks from him, which makes the story even more tragic and frightening. The bells on the top of Fortunato's cap become more sorrowful and sadder as two men go deeper into the catacombs.
What makes the story even more ironical is victim's name: Fortunato. Supposedly it is a derivative from the word "fortune" which does not help this hero, even all the way around.
To conclude all of the above, it is to be mentioned that Montresor was, probably, telling this story to a priest "who so well knew the nature of my soul". He was not able to admit the guilt, and who knows maybe
