Automotive Staying Safe this Summer on the Open Road
It's summer once again and what better way to spend this season than traveling? But before you do so make sure that your car is fit to travel. Kit Johnson winner of NAPA's 2007 Technician of the Year from East Helena, Montana has provided some important maintenance tips to help you in preparing your vehicle for the long destinations ahead.
Mr. Johnson said, "Hitting the pavement and seeing the country from your car is one of America's most time-honored traditions. Unfortunately, some people end up on the side of the road because they forget to do simple preparations before the trip to keep their vehicle up and running."
Mr. Johnson recommends to have your cooling system checked, flushed, and filled before going on a long trip. Likewise, it is best also to inspect belts and hoses for signs of deterioration plus top off all your car fluids including antifreeze, power steering, engine oil, brake and transmission fluids and also the windshield washer solvent.
Summertime is also an opportunity to learn and to experiment with new gadgets and accessories that you can add to your car in order to enhance further its performance. Why not try your hands on some Hurst line lock and see the benefits that it can provide your car.
Mr. Johnson has also some tips on how you can save on your fuel consumption and here are some of his recommendations:
3. Don't take for granted any suspicious leaks that may be coming from the car especially if its gas or oil leaks. Mr. Johnson said that even the smallest leak can prove to be a very expensive cost if not fixed in time.
4. When traveling although cannot be helped but you have to at least try to minimize the load of your car. Just bring items that you really need and leave all the "what if" items behind. Mr. Johnson explained that an extra 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce fuel economy by one or two percent in most cars.
Mr. Johnson also suggests for car owners to check and to make sure that their car air conditioning is working properly. Aside from that, the battery should also be inspected if it's operating properly and of course don't forget one of the most important part of your car-the brakes make sure that there isn't any grinding noises or vibrations. He also recommends a pre-tip, front-to-back inspection by a trusted technician for your own peace of mind while driving.
Mr. Johnson also recommends to do all the car maintenance procedure prior to your vacation plans in order to give ample time for replacement and repairs in case its needed.
Mr. Johnson said, "Drivers should read their owner's manual and keep up with regular service checks. It's important to maintain your vehicle throughout the year so that your vehicle is ready for those long summer drives."
