Comics and video games go hand in hand in many ways, so it's a natural progression to take popular video game franchises and transform them into video game comics. Over the years, we've seen many video games represented in comic book form from kid-friendly books such as Sonic the Hedgehog, to gritty and more mature titles like Halo and Metal Gear.

The comparisons between comics and video games includes the vibrant characters, vast worlds and creative environments that visually take readers and players out of their humdrum lives into these fantasy worlds rich with adventure and intrigue. And video game comics are the marriage of these two unique worlds. Video game comics take the powerful and innovative concepts and characters of video games and place them in a medium that is literally limitless in the events that can take place. Video games, like movies, are limited by budgets and technology, but video game comics take those games to a completely different level.

Imagine the massive 3-D worlds of Halo and the interaction between live players in game play. Now take that concept and add a solid story line and new environments not limited by the restrictions of the game's capabilities. Sure, it's a different type of experience, but video game comics offer a supplemental form of entertainment beyond, in some ways, what the games themselves offer.

Look at the success of a publisher like Udon, who specializes in translating Capcom video games into video game comics. Chiefly focusing on Street Fighter II adaptations, the company has branched the game out into several video game comics such as Street Fighter: Legends, Sakura, Street Fighter II Turbo and more. Like the animated movies and cartoons, the video game comics take the stories and characters beyond words on a screen and endless one-on-one fights in a tournament. And besides the Street Fighter video game comics, there are also video game comics based on Darkstalkers and Rival Schools out of Udon.

Top Cow took the ever popular online game City of Heroes and created video game comics exploring the possibilities that could occur in those online worlds. Other video games that have been presented in comic form include Resident Evil, World of Warcraft, Warhammer and many more! Video game comics are a fresh way to expand your gaming experience.
