The Secret and the Law of Attraction - Five Steps to Making It Work for You!

Maybe you saw it on Oprah, or maybe you have just heard about it from a friend -- The Secret is taking the world by storm, one person at a time. The movie was great, inspirational in fact, but it leaves all kinds of questions.

How do I use the Law of Attraction in my every day life? Do everyday people get results and how?

Let's talk about the five steps of attraction. These are the steps that make up the use of the Law of Attraction that you could start putting to use in your life today. While the concept of the Law of Attraction is truly simple - there is information that can make each step flow more smoothly and move you towards the things that you want in your life.

So, let's get on with it! The five steps of attraction are……. Drum roll please…….!

1. Know what you DON'T want

2. Know what you DO want

3. Ask for it

4. Allow it

5. Receive it, enjoy it, have gratitude for it

I'll briefly cover each of these and give some examples.

The first step: Know what you DON'T want

While this might seem obvious and not even need mentioning - I believe there are many, many people who have not even allowed themselves the luxury of coming to an understanding of what they don't want. There are tons of reasons for this but mostly it comes from the belief that they don't have any control about the circumstances in their life. Life just happens and they have been dealt a hand and they just have to live with it. This is living a life by default. Whether they wanted it to happen or not, these individuals have not been living by their own agendas but by someone else's. You might not be this individual but I can bet you have lots of people in your life that are like this.

The starting point for people living by default is to find out what they don't want. They've been living life by other people's agenda that it's time now to find out what really matters to them.

In my previous life, not previous lifetime, but in my early life - I was an extreme people-pleaser and everything I chose to do was based on what other's wanted. As a result, I really got out of touch with what Karen wanted. I had attracted relationships, jobs and other circumstances that really didn't work for me in the long run. You see, when I needed something from others, they weren't prepared to give it because I was the one always giving. Sound familiar….? Mom's are notorious for this! Anyways, the first thing I had to do was reacquaint myself with me and get to know what I didn't like, what I did like and what was important to me which started to look nothing like the life that I had been in.

The second step: Know what you DO want

An obvious follow up to the first step. However, this is crucial! Again, for those that have been living life by default - this is a great step. WOW!!! What is possible for me in my life? I think the best question to ask is 'What would you do, be or have if you knew you couldn't fail?'. Forget about the 'ya-but's'! WHAT IF!? What if this was true? (It is true, by the way, but a struggle of a concept for most all of us). Anyways, start writing a list of all the things you would like to do, be or have. Very powerful!

Which leads to the third step: Ask for it.

This is the step where the two levels of attraction - automatic and active - are located at. We have all heard 'Ask and you shall receive' or 'Ask and it is already given' but do we believe it? For most of us, our experiences don't, for the most part, reflect this step in it's truth. But you need to ask for it. Name it and claim it. Write your list of goals. Meditate on what you want. Visualize it. Pray for it. Every one of these actions is the same thing - asking for it. Focusing on something is asking for it. Thanks heavens for lag time! Sometimes we ask for something and we don't really want it and that lag time saves us! Energy flows where focus goes. The energy of the Universe or God or whatever Supreme Being you believe in goes where your thoughts go. With every thought you are asking. What have you been asking for lately?

The fourth step: Allow it.

Sorry to say but I believe this is the step we mostly muddle up. Allowing what you ask for means that you expect it to happen. You never question where it is. You just know it is on it's way. You have faith. You know it's a done deal. Again, sorry, but most of us ask and then wonder where the heck 'IT' is. This is the step that the 'wall' exists in. The wall between what we want and us goes up with each thought and feeling we have that asks 'where is it'? Our goal with allowing it is to keep our thoughts as pure positive energy in the direction of no doubt.

The fifth step: Receive 'IT', enjoy 'IT', have gratitude for 'IT'!

As odd as this may sound to some of you, but sometimes we forget parts of this step. I KNOW! Is that crazy! We've been waiting, desiring, wanting, hoping and then it shows up and sometimes we're not even aware we asked for it in the first place. How can that be? ….you say. Well, mostly, I think this happens because we don't give credit to ourselves for our part in the co-creative process. We just think it's a coincidence that we found that perfect outfit ON SALE, or that great parking spot, or you were just in the right place at the right time to get that job, or that you had to stay late and then you were tied up in a traffic jam because of a traffic accident that happened around the time you were supposed to leave for home WHAT!!!? (you are always asking for your well-being, and a safe trip home, right?) That's right, appreciate the times things take longer than usual - you never know what really crappy stuff you're avoiding by being in that dumb lineup. These are just a few examples of how we don't acknowledge this whole attraction process and our part in it. Start paying closer attention and I'll bet you'll see examples all around you all the time.

Now you have some basic steps to start with using the Law of Attraction in your every day life. The Law that was outlined in the movie, 'The Secret' and showcased on Oprah in February 2007.
