Spurs: Young-Talented But Unsuccessful

I think out of all the teams in the Premiership, I'd most like to see Tottenham win something this season. After all, they've got many young English players and are more often than not good entertainment value.

But do I really expect them to lift a trophy this season? Not really. I always think despite their quality at some stage they're going to come unstuck.

I don't think even the most ardent Spurs fan would expect them to be competing for the Premiership title anytime soon - so that leaves the two domestic cup competitions and Europe.

As I write this article, they're still in the FA Cup, are heading to Arsenal on level terms for the second leg of the semi-final of the League Cup, and look to be getting a buy into the Quarter Finals in the UEFA. I'll have my fingers crossed they can turn one of these opportunities into silverware to take back to White Hart Lane but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm of the opinion that they're more than likely to get beaten by Arsenal in the second leg at the Emirates. If they can get a decent run of ties in the FA Cup they might be a decent bet, but I think their best avenue for success might be in Europe.

At home, they knock the ball around and really ask a lot of questions of their opponents. I think in Defoe, Barbatov and Keane they have some excellent attacking options up front. Aaron Lennon is immense in my opinion and I'm convinced has a glorious future ahead of him for club and country. With these players at their disposal, I think Spurs can unsettle teams from abroad and rattle them at home.

Unfortunately for Martin Jol's team, I think many Premiership clubs know too well how Spurs like to play, and come up with game plans to stifle them. At this stage in their development, I don't think their young, talented team have enough answers for sustained success.

I will however tip them to win the UEFA Cup this year, and mount serious challenges next season provided they can retain the nucleus of their side and maybe add a few more talented defenders.
