Abusing Your Opt In List

I recently signed up for an opt in list on website traffic building. It looked good, informative and offered some great free bonuses.

A few seconds after I had entered my name and email, I received a message telling me where to go to download my free ebook. I happily downloaded the free book and when I checked my inbox again, I had not one, not two, but THREE more messages from the same website!

Within the next 24 hours, I received a total of 9 emails from this opt in list. Tired of looking at blaring ads that closely resembled spam, I unsubscribed, just a day after joining!

This is a prime example of abusing an opt in list. If this company had simply refrained from blasting me with so many emails, I probably would have stayed signed up and received dozens more offers . . . appropriately spaced.

How can you make sure you?re not abusing your opt in list? Well, think about how many emails you get in any given day. How many of those would you want to be from the same company trying to get you to buy something? Exactly. You shouldn?t send more than one message a day to your subscribers and I would even go so far as to say that you shouldn?t send emails more than once or MAYBE twice a week unless they signed up for a daily ezine.

Another big mistake is to only send out ads. Sure, you can get top dollar for solo ads aimed at your subscribers, but they won?t take much notice of your emails if all you ever send them is advertising. At least 75% of your emails should be good solid information.

If you have an ezine and are planning on selling solo ads, don?t take on more than one for every two to three issues of your ezine. If you send your newsletter out every week, then that means just two solo ads a month. If you send it out monthly, then just one every two months. You don?t want your readers to get jaded and unsubscribe.

Remember, you can?t sell anything to unsubscribed members!
