Most employers have a benefit called maternity leave. This is where any woman that is expecting a baby can take a few weeks off of work without worrying about losing their job. The average time for this leave is six weeks and as long as you return back to work when you are suppose to you have a job. It is advised that you wait as close to your delivery date as possible because you only have a few weeks. In the United States most employers will not pay you for this time, but it is still good to have the option of having time off.

Six weeks is not a lot of time to have a baby and adjust to having the newborn in the home. There are a lot of changes that will be made when you have a baby at home. Caring for a baby will take a lot of time and effort and the more time you have the better. You can check into other options that you may have to give yourself more time during this exciting time of your life. You may be able to take a disability leave, medical leave or vacation time as most companies offer these to all employees. Having time off from work during this time will help make it less stressful and easier to handle.

Your baby will need some time to develop a regular sleeping pattern. In the meantime you will be up all hours of the night feeding and changing your baby. You will be doing without a lot of needed rest during this time. It would be really difficult to go to work each day under these circumstances, which is another benefit to having a maternity leave. You will also need time for recovering from having your baby. This time is different for each woman and there is no way to predict how long it will take you. Therefore, having as much time off as you can get will help to ensure that you have enough time to recover properly.
