Improving Your Golf Shot - Getting A Better Grip
There are many different ways to grip a golf club but here we're going to look at some basic steps to get you started. In working through these keep in the back of your mind the old adage that "The top hand holds while the bottom hand throws".
Step 1. With the golf head on the ground take the club in your left hand and grip it using only the last three fingers of your hand (not your thumb and forefinger) and the palm of the hand.
Step 2. With the club gripped by just three fingers ensure that your hand is near the top of the club and then place your thumb so that it runs straight down the line of the club.
Step 3. Now take hold of the club with the fingers of your right hand. As your right hand grasps the club you'll notice a series of small vertical grooves in the palm of the right hand where it meets the wrist and these should be overlapped with the matching grooves in the palm of your left hand.
Step 4. Take hold of the small finger of your right hand with the forefinger of the left and, at this point look at the index finger and thumb of the right hand. These two fingers should form a "V", the point of which should indicate an imaginary line running straight up to your right shoulder.
Step 5. Make sure that your right thumb is not running straight down the club but is angled slightly toward your right shoulder.
Okay, these are the five basic steps for gripping the club but we now need to look at some variations.
If you have large hands then you should use an overlapping grip with the small finger of the right hand resting between and on top of the forefinger and middle finger of the left hand.
If you have small hands then you should use a 10-finger grip with all of your fingers gripping the club, rather like a baseball grip.
In all cases, you should double-check that your grip is correct by ensuring that you can see three of the knuckles on your left hand.
One of the secrets to a good grip is to hold the club lightly, but firmly, with both hands. The more relaxed your grip, the farther and straighter you will hit the ball.
If you are having a problem with gripping the club too tightly then extend your target arm. Hold the club at an angle in front of you with the heel of your left hand on top of the handle. This puts the club across the top joints of the fingers and the heel supports and traps the club, relieving you of the tendency to hold it too tightly.
