Economic Crisis? A New Ice Age? Let's Spend £300 Million On An Indoor Ski Resort!

The Evening Star reported today of confirmed plans to build a huge winter sports and amusement park in Suffolk by autumn. The complex will include ski and rock climbing facilities, residential accommodation, 36 ponds, bars and restaurants, a convenience store, and a post office and should be completed by 2013. The development is no doubt exciting, but is 2009 really a logical time to begin building such a complex?
The current economic situation has already caused dome problems for the project. Persimmon Homes, who were in charge of building the 45 social housing units, have had to postpone building until the recession starts to improve. There will undoubtedly be many other people who might consider the building of a mega-expensive attraction at such a time to be foolish and comparisons to the Millennium Dome dont seem too far fetched.
And there are also those concerned about the future environmental situation who might be laughing nervously. Two weeks ago The Sun ran with the headline, Suns disturbingly quiet cycle prompts fear of global COOLING, a report prompted by a recent lack of sun spot activity which, in the past, may have caused severe plummeting temperatures. The last time the sun displayed such inactivity was in around 1650, causing a solar hibernation and frigid cold winters. This had a direct impact on Northern Europe with famine, crop failures, and widespread deaths. For those who are confident that this can and will happen, this begs the question: why build a massive snow generating machine if were likely to get the same conditions, naturally, for free?
In terms of CO2 emissions, the project is likely to cause some problems in spite of all their intentions to be prudent with energy resources; so the project planners do seem to have some kind of environmental conscience. The planning for 36 ponds is not just for aesthetic reasons. They are also to ensure the safety of a newt colony set to be displaced because of the building process.
And the positives do stretch further than that. Of course the project is set to supply the area with hundreds of full time and part time jobs, and will give another reason for people to spend their hard-earned money in Suffolk. Additionally, it is a sky resort, there to offer an opportunity for people of all ages to get fit, and try a new interesting sport in the process. As for the timing of the plans? Would there ever really be a good time to start such a risky new venture?
