If you are using free advertising to promote your business, and get your products and services in front of as many people as possible, there are a several options, but I want to share with you which I think are the best. I checked my Google Analytics report this morning so I could see where I was with visits to my site, review key metrics like bounce rates, time spent on my site, and for the purpose of today's discussion, where my traffic was coming from. To my surprise, I saw that a vast majority of my traffic had come directly from Facebook. The reason for this can be traced back to one thing. Not only did most of my "free" traffic come from Facebook, but there were other thing about my metrics that lead me to believe that Facebook is one of my most valuable channels for advertising.

48% of my website traffic came from Facebook:

Not only is creating a Facebook fan page free, but it is engaging and the easiest way to spread your content about the web. I created a page for one of my businesses, invited my friends to "Like" it, and within two days, ten people liked my page. I did some old fashion measuring with the calculator and the net result of just ten people liking my page was that over 3,000 people had access to view my page. In other words, I got three thousand impressions for the page. Pages give you more impressions, more traffic, and will ultimately help you establish a brand.

My Facebook page traffic was higher quality traffic than other sources:

This factor is why I would imagine large brands like TGIFridays, Adidas, Carl's Jr, and Butterfinger are engaging their customers through social media. They tend to drive traffic and make more sales from this traffic because a sense of community and loyalty drive them to do so. From my analytics report, I saw that not only did FB drive more traffic, but fewer left my site without viewing at least one page (bounce rate) and the amount of time people spent on my site was at least triple what it was from other traffic sources. Traffic is only helpful if those visitors are engaged and ready to buy.

Regardless of your advertising budget or company size, using Facebook fan pages to engage your customers, build loyalty, brand recognition, and eventually grow sales are all worthwhile reasons to utilize this medium for advertising.
