Entrepreneurial Education - How Do You Encourage Entrepreneurship in Your Teens?

I've always been an entrepreneur. I remember the very first money I made from my own business was by making friendship bracelets in Elementary School. I had color samples to show my "customers" and even branched into the then popular friendship pins! Life was good at 10 years old. I even had a partner and we split everything 50/50.

As I got older, my business ideas grew with me. Soon I needed some parental involvement to keep my businesses going. Unfortunately, my parents didn't really know how to help me channel these entrepreneurial tendencies and many of my passions were squelched.

Now that I am a parent, I realize how hard it is to entertain every new idea that my children come up with. My oldest child has a notebook of ways to make money. Some are innovative...others are downright hilarious. But how can I encourage these interests in a realistic way?

I've actually become friends with many other families who have children that think the same way. Here are some things they do with and for their kids.

They allow their kids the freedom to explore business ideas AND they allow them to fail! Failure is not bad. Robert Kiyosaki, one of my favorite authors, explains failure like this: Failure is only bad if you don't learn from it. I'm loosely paraphrasing him, but that's the basic idea.

Too many parents are afraid to let their kids fail, which robs the children of real world experiences. Teach your kids how to bounce back from small failures so that they can either learn to see bigger ones coming and avoid them or know how to bounce back from bigger failures.

Getting your kids mentors is another HUGE thing we can do for our kids. I have a friend who sent her teenage son to a family friend to live for a month. And he didn't live down the street...he lived across the country. Her son learned how to think like this entrepreneur and now her son is financially independent and made enough passive income for his family that his dad could come home from corporate America.

Networking with other like minded people not only helps your teens to see things how entrepreneurs see them, but also opens doors to new ventures and possible business opportunities.

Just encouraging your teens to follow their dreams, even if their dreams change every week or so, will give them the freedom to really take off when it's time. Bring entrepreneurial education to your child and you'll be amazed at what can result!
