How Do You Treat Cold Sores?

Cold sores are as old as man kind and there has not be a known cure. However, there are known ways and medications that can help relieve or treat cold sores. This infection is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus type I (HSV-1). Abreva is known to heal the infection faster. This is because it goes right inside the body healing the sore inside out. When using it you should not use your finger to apply on the infected area. Use cotton wool and you should only use it once. This will reduce the chances of cross contermination.

You can take lysine supplements to treat and prevent cold sores. Applying lysine cream on your lips twice daily will make the sores heal faster. Avoid eating foods rich in arginine as this aggravates the herpes virus. These include chocolate, almond pea nuts, cashew nuts etc.

Viroxyn is another treatment for cold sores which have been recommended by FDA. This medicine works faster as it eliminates the mature virus from the body. It takes 3-5 days to clear your cold sore and needs only a single-application when used correctly. It comes with an easy to use applicator. You should however advise your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding as it might harm your baby.

You can use freezing cold ice or warm compresses to soothe the sore. You should avoid touching the infected area, squeezing or picking it as this will infect the other parts of your face. Using your own utensils, facial towels, lip balm will greatly reduce the chances of infecting others. Avoiding stress and fatigue will ensure your immune system is not depressed; this will make your cold sores heal faster.
