2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games: A Guide To The Games And The City

Delhi is hosting the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games. This is the first time that India is hosting the Commonwealth Games and the excitement is palpable. Delhi government is expecting a huge number of foreign tourists to converge on the city during the Commonwealth Games. Several airlines have offered cheap tickets to India during the period. In fact, a number of travel operators have announced special Commonwealth Games tour packages that may include Delhi flight tickets, accommodation and sightseeing tours.

Commonwealth Games Village

The city government is developing a residential project to accommodate the athletes and officials. It features more than 30 apartment buildings with over 1000 flats. The project boasts of world class architecture and top of the line interior designs. The Commonwealth Games Village incorporates world's best security systems.

Transport

A special emphasis is being given on the airports and road infrastructure. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is renovated and expanded to match world class standards.

The airport's new Terminal 3 is one of the biggest airport terminals in the world. Additionally, a new runaway is being constructed that is expected to ease the airport's heavy traffic. Similarly, new roads and bridges are being constructed to manage the city's traffic.

Sports

The Commonwealth Games 2010 will see more than 70 countries participating in a range of sporting events, such as gymnastics, boxing, cycling, hockey, lawn bowls, squash, rugby, shooting, table tennis, tennis, netball, weightlifting and wrestling.

Venues

A number of new and existing stadiums will be used to hold all these sports events. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi University Sports Complex, Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Talkatora Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range and Indira Gandhi Arena are some of the facilities that will host these games.

Other Preparations

To handle the influx of English speaking tourists in the city, the government is planning to teach English to cab and auto drivers, porters and the service staff. Apart from Delhi, the Indian Government aims to organize English learning programs for people in several major tourist destinations. The government will also organize a free trip for participants to the world famous Taj Mahal.

With a number of historical monuments, Delhi is definitely the place for cultural and historical aficionados. On one hand, there are the gorgeous and intricately-build Islamic structures and on the other hand you have the grand European architecture that reflects the magnificent times of the British Raj. Some of the tourist hotspots include the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, India Gate and Lotus Temple.
