Your Wedding Is Not Your Wedding

If you're planning a wedding and you are either the bride or groom, then this next statement will come as a bit of a shock. Prepare yourself, you may even need to sit down. Even though you have planned this wedding for some time and you have made a commitment to each other, there is still something that you may wish to know. You won't believe it, and you won't accept it. But it's true.

This is not YOUR wedding. Yes, I know it is you and your partner getting married. It is you and your partner that have made a life-long commitment. And it may be even you and your partner that have decided to make a financial sacrifice in order to achieve your special day. But it is still not your wedding.

If it was only your wedding, then you would be able to do this by yourselves without anybody else involved. But, in truth, there will be other people involved both in the run-up to the special day and on the day itself.

Virtually every bride and groom has a mother, a father, even grandparents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. They will all want to get involved especially on the day itself. They all love you and respect you and want what's best for you. They see you taking this momentous and memorable step which can shape the rest of your lives.

It is also a momentous step for them. After you get married, their lives also may change for the better or worse. Suddenly, for parents, their son or daughter is leaving home and making a life-long commitment to somebody else -- potentially even a relative stranger.

Whatever happens, your social life and relationships will change perceptibly forever. The way in which you interact with other people and the social circles that you mix in will be different forever.

Yet these people that witness these changes will also want what's best for you on the day and, of course, it will be a special day for them too. They will want to enjoy it, remember it, and be part of it. They will go out of their way to help you through the process of planning your wedding day and helping you on the day itself.
