Jacuzzi has become synonymous with baths and spas but the seven Jacuzzi brothers who originally emigrated from Italy made their first claim to fame by inventing the first enclosed cabin monoplane. This became the airplane that carried mail for the U.S. Postal Service and carried passengers from the San Francisco Bay Area to Yosemite National Park.


It wasn't until 1956 that they had the idea of treating a family member's arthritis symptoms with a hydrotherapy pump. The Jacuzzi brothers invented a pump and a small niche business was born.


The original J-300 portable pump was sold primarily to hospitals and schools until Roy Jacuzzi (a third generation family member) was able to capitalize on American's interest in health, fitness and leisure activities. It was in 1968 when Roy invented and marketed the first self-contained, fully integrated whirlpool bath that incorporated jets in the sides of the tub. It was this early invention that created a new industry.


Roy incorporated larger units that could accommodate several people along with heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean. This led to the creation of the first spa in 1970.


The Jacuzzi family sold the business in 1979 to New York-based Kidde Inc. Roy was the only family member who didn't leave the business or retire. Roy continued to run the operations into a decade of new designs including the Avanza.


The Avanza was a whirlpool bath / hot tub that could be used in either configuration. It could be installed inside or outside a house and was the first all-in-one hot tub/whirlpool bath.


After a career marked with innovation and improvement, Roy Jacuzzi was inducted into the National Kitchen & bath Hall of Fame as a result of his many contributions in the innovation of hydrotherapy for home use.


Since then Jacuzzi has become the world's most recognized and largest selling brand of jetted/whirlpool baths and spas. Besides getting the first whirlpool bath patent, Jacuzzi has 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls and product design.
