Bluetooths are relatively expensive as compared to wired hands free headsets, so it is important to choose the right Bluetooth headset. Prices for Bluetooths range from $30 - $300 whereas you can purchase wired hands free for as little as $5. When choosing a Bluetooth headset, comfort is one of the important elements. Those headsets which loop around the ear tend to be more comfortable while those which are jammed into the ear are more secure

There are two types of batteries; some use a standard AAA battery while the rest have an internal rechargeable battery. The AAA battery type is much heavier, which can be uncomfortable around your ear. One major advantage though is the ability to purchase an inexpensive replacement battery almost anywhere, Rechargeable batteries are light weight but can present a problem is an electrical outlet is not available. You will also want to compare the battery life for both calls and while in standby mode.

You want to make sure he Bluetooth is relatively simple to use and the controls are easy to reach. The controls typically used the most are call answer, call end, volume and last number redial. These functions should be activated by pushing one button. Other functions you will look for when choosing a Bluetooth headset are 3 way calling, putting a call on hold, call reject and mute. Voice activated calling is also an important feature the Bluetooth should have. All these functions should be available by speaking after activating the menu. Making calls using names in your cellphone phonebook, retrieving messages and missed calls should all be available features. Digital dialing will allow you to make calls which aren't saved in your phonebook.

One of the biggest complaints with Bluetooths is the quality of the connection. The caller usually is able to hear at least as good as with most wireless headsets. Sometimes the microphones are so sensitive that the caller hears their own voice. This is of course very distracting. You'll also want to choose a Bluetooth with a great noise reduction so the person on the other end doesn't pick up sounds from those around you.

Of course the manufacturer will always tell you how great their product is. It is important to look for independent reviews of Bluetooths to see what prior purchases have to say about the item. It's important to read about the pros and cons. Certain aspects important to the writer might not be as important for your needs.
