Sony is a major partner in the development of Blu-ray technology delivering both the technical know-how in its products as well as offering up Sony Pictures movie titles on Blu-ray disc. In fact, the Sony Vaio AR was the first laptop equipped with a Blu-ray disc drive. Today's models have come down in price since the introduction of that first model and many other manufacturers such as Dell now offer Blu-ray disc drives.

Purchasing a laptop computer with a Blu-ray drive isn't for everyone. It depends on what you want your laptop to do for you. Do you just use your laptop for checking email while on vacation? Or is it your go-to machine? Do you want to edit your Blu-ray camcorder footage? Now we're talking! Do you want to view your Blu-ray movies on your laptop or connect your laptop to your HDTV set and use it as a Blu-ray player? Do you have a need for huge storage capacities? Depending on your needs, buying a laptop with a Blu-ray drive preinstalled may be the best option.

Upgrading your existing laptop to include a Blu-ray player involves not only the hardware upgrade of the drive itself, but most likely a video graphics card as well. In addition, you may want to upgrade to include a TV tuner for capturing and viewing television on your laptop. All these upgrades require processing power, memory, and technical ability.

If money is no object, the simplest thing to do is buy one of the Blu-ray laptops already built. These bad boys come with everything you need for a high definition Bluray experience and allow you to capture, edit, and burn high-quality, high definition content as well as store up to 50 gigabytes of data on one disc.
