Saddle Seat Saddles, which are also known as Cut Back Saddle, was originally developed in North America to improve the movements of many breeds of show horses and their performance in the rings. These kinds of horses usually show vigorous action of their forelegs and sometimes run at high speed. These horses generally keep their head at a higher position and their motion is more up and down in nature and would cover a lot of distance at a good speed. To enable the horses to use their shoulders freely and more vigorously, these saddles were designed with pommel cut away in U shape. That is why these Saddles are also known as Cut Back Saddles. The seats of these saddles are more flat compared to other types of English saddles. Therefore, these saddles were also known as Flat Saddles earlier. While buying these saddles, we should look for the quality of saddle and its fittings. Saddle Quality Regarding Saddle quality, we should consider a) Leather Quality, b) Tree Construction and c) Stitching and Buckles. Leather Quality The cost of a saddle would depend on the quality of leather. Naturally, saddles made of better quality leather would cost more. But, the appearance of these costlier saddles is better, when properly maintained and also better to use. To check for leather quality, the following points should be taken care of. " Check feel: Better quality leather feels smoother and are more supple. They would never be spongy. If you observe any small cracks on the top side, you should not buy them, because it shows dry rot or overtly dry leather. " Check strength: Hair follicles of leather should be close together and there should not be any wrinkles. Open or course grain of leather having small wrinkle indicates that the leather is made from belly which is weaker than those made from animal's sides and back. " Check finish: You should see that the leather's edges are skived and do not have sharp edges, burnished and sealed with edge coating. The saddle should have edges finished nicely and not having fibrous, rough edges. Tree Construction The tree of a saddle may be considered to be its frame. Saddle would not be of any use if it is broken. You should check for following points to ensure this. " Check for tree damage or breakage: You may ensure this by proper visual inspection using a laid down procedure. " Check Tree Material: You should try to find out what material the tree is made of. Rawhide covered wood trees are stronger and have more life. Fiberglass covered wood trees are strong as well as waterproof. " Check the bars: Proper inspection should be made about this. Stitching and Buckles Stitching and Buckles play an important role in a saddle as it holds the saddle's parts together. So, these are also to be inspected carefully. The rivets and stitching are to be checked to ensure that they are properly fitted and not worn out. You should also carefully inspect other fittings like D-rings and straps.
