Automotive, Great deals on two wheels
With over thirty million cars estimated to be on the UK roads alone, space has never been so much of an issue as it is for road-users in the 21st century. Indeed, more and more people are turning to two-wheeled transport as a means of beating the heavy congestion that exists in most of the major cities. And, not only are motorcycles easier to manoeuvre along busy roads, but they can also be parked in much tighter spaces, which helps to alleviate another major problem car-users are facing across the country.
But, perhaps the greatest advantage of opting for two-wheeled motorised transport is the cost. On average, motorcycles consume around half the amount of fuel per mile than a car does, and given the current cost of petrol across the globe, this works out to be quite a considerable amount over the course of a year.
Additionally, on-street motorcycle parking is often provided for free and whenever costs do apply, the charges are usually considerably cheaper than what they are with automobiles. Furthermore, motorbikes are cheaper and easier to maintain too, given that they have less mechanical parts and hence there are less things that can go wrong; well at least that's what you hope!
And, as beneficial as it is to save money whilst getting from A to B, motorcycle transport has an ever greater advantage over its four-wheeled counterpart; one that is of particular importance in a society that is becoming more and more environmentally-conscious. Although motorbikes do still require petrol, they are far more eco-friendly than the average automobile due primarily to the fact they require less fuel to function.
But, there's more to it than that. Whilst many people drive a large, heavy car around with just themselves inside, a motorbike is built to fit only one or two people and is therefore designed accordingly. And, whilst a car may sit in a traffic jam for quite a while with engines running, a motorcycle can often bypass the traffic queues completely, thus minimising any fuel wastage.
It is interesting to know that a team of boffins from London's Loughborough University recently showcased the world's first ever hydrogen-powered motorbike. Instead of having a standard fuel tank, it contains an onboard fuel cell that can be filled with hydrogen within 3 minutes, with the only emissions being warm air and water. As a prototype, however, you may not be seeing such a machine on the roads for at least a few years yet; but in the meantime, the amount of motorcycles users on UK roads look set to continue to rise, as people strive to beat the congestion whilst looking to save money at the same time.
However, as with any motor vehicle on the road, there is still a need to purchase bike insurance, whether it's comprehensive, third-party fire and theft or a simple third-party only policy. And, in keeping with the other ‘economical' aspects of motorcycles, the insurance premiums, again, are typically cheaper than that of car insurance, which is just one more reason why it can make sense to switch to two-wheeled transport.
