There are some furniture names that have stood the test of time and there are others that some people recognize and other people do not. Beds, couches, chairs, and tables are great examples of names with which most people are very familiar. However, every type of bed, couch, chair, and table has its own specific title that many people have never heard of. For instance, do you know what a canapé is? This name does not refer to an overhead hanging; instead, it is the name for an ornamental three-seater couch. Does the name futon ring a bell? This Japanese piece of furniture is actually a couch that can be adjusted into a bed and is becoming more and more popular in other places of the world.

Some of the most confusing furniture titles, however,  actually refer to specialized types of tables. One example of this is a buffet, which is a small side table that usually acts as decoration in either the dining room or living room. However, there are very many variations of this type of furniture:

A hutch. This item is sometimes referred to as a china hutch or a kitchen hutch; however, it is usually the same piece. A hutch normally goes in the kitchen or the dining room and has two sections. The bottom section is normally a cabinet and the top section has open shelves. These pieces are perfect for displaying your family's oldest chinaware or your children's masterpiece sculptures from art class. Hutches blend beauty and function quite well so it is easy to see why they are such a popular furnishing choice.

A buffet cabinet. These furniture items are essentially a hutch without its top half. The table surface sits at a normal height and the body of the piece is a space in which you can store everything from candles and place mats to hats, scarves, and gloves. Buffet cabinets are great hidden storage spaces!

A table. This piece is the simplest, but also the most decorative. A buffet table looks fantastic whether is in the dining room, living room, or hallway. Hang a mirror over it or place a vase of fresh flowers on top and you have a piece that everyone will admire.
