Some Benefit from Acupuncture

The acupuncture and history goes like this, more than 2,000 years ago, Chinese healers discovered that manipulating certain points on the bodies of their patients seemed to make them feel a lot better. As they experimented, these healers began using sharpened stones to manipulate these points. These instruments eventually evolved into needles.

The philosophy behind acupuncture concerns the Qi (pronounced "chee") or life-energy being in balance. When the Qi is out-of-balance or even blocked, a person will become physically or mentally ill. It is believed that energy flows along paths in the body called meridians, and that the energy can be tapped and influenced at certain points.

Traditionally, it was believed that these points corresponded to certain organs or sites in the body, and that by manipulating the points, a practitioner could actually heal the organ. Some acupuncture sources claim the practice will cure a whole host of ailments: diabetes, depression, arthritis and cancer.

These claims are at the heart of some controversies surrounding acupuncture, as Western physicians consider it dangerous to assume that this alone can cure or control serious ailments such as diabetes and cancer.

However, controversy does not mean that acupuncture is not useful. In fact, there are physicians who engage in the practice themselves, as a supplement, rather than an alternative therapy for their patients. Where it seems to help the most is in patients suffering from chronic pain, such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Sometimes acupuncture does become an actual alternative or replacement therapy. Many patients discover acupuncture after having tried many different types of conventional therapies which failed to work for them. This is sometimes the case for people suffering from fibromyalgia, a condition that is often difficult to treat due to the existence of widespread pain in many types of tissue in the patient's body.

The reason acupuncture seems to work for many of these patients has to do with the body's natural ability to fight pain and fatigue, though this ability may have to be coaxed from the body by a therapist. Acupuncture is simply one method of coaxing out these natural chemicals. Studies show that acupuncture releases endorphins, which combat pain in addition to promoting a relaxed state and increased energy. People suffering from depression and fatigue often benefit from acupuncture, as do animals in certain cases. It has been found helpful with arthritic dogs, as well as horses with back problems.

Some people undergoing conventional treatment choose to seek an acupuncturist for pain control or relaxation benefits, finding that it actually increases the successfulness of their conventional treatment. These claims make sense when taking into consideration the holistic philosophy traditionally governing the use of acupuncture.

If you suffer from chronic pain or from fatigue, and if you are also exploring conventional methods of dealing with it, you may want to consider trying acupuncture as well. It can be a great supplement to your regular treatments, or it may just help you relax. Simply feeling good is often the best medicine. There is a possibility of chronic pain management with acupuncture, that seems to work well and could be worth a try.
