"West Side Story" is a classic movie based on a '50s Broadway musical, which is in turn loosely based on "Romeo and Juliet". The story, acting, music, and choreography are all excellent.

The film takes place in a ghetto on the west side of Manhattan, where two rival street gangs, the Jets, an Italian gang, and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, battle it out. Meanwhile, Tony, the former leader of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, a beautiful Puerto Rican girl who happens to be the sister of Bernardo, the Sharks' leader.

Trouble ensues when Tony tries to break up a rumble between the two gangs. Bernardo ends up killing Riff, the Jets' leader, whence out of anger, Tony kills Bernardo. Nevertheless, Tony and Maria maintain their strong love for each other and decide to get away. Their plan goes sour, however. Tony is to meet Maria at Doc's candy store, but Maria gets detained by the police, who interrogate her. She tells her friend Anita to tell Tony to wait for her there, but once she arrives, the Jets nearly rape her until Doc breaks it up. Then out of anger, she tells the Jets that Maria's boyfriend Chino killed Tony. Once Doc tells Tony this, he decides he has nothing to live for, so he begs Chino to come and kill him as well. Eventually Tony finds Maria alive, but then Chino shoots him and he dies in her arms. Maria takes the gun and threatens to avenge Tony's death and finally kill herself.
