When I was little we had Hula hoops, paper dolls, and dominoes. These were great for learning but in today's world we have electronic games and the internet. I wish these were available when I was a child.

It is very important to introduce your child to as many things as possible as early as you can to help them explore their environment. I have a step son that is autistic and he absolutely enjoys internet games and videos.

Autism is a social disease so he does not learn much from interacting with others and when he is on the internet he feels he can do whatever he sets his mind out to do. I have found that Lego's have helped him so much, he loves to build. He builds bridges roads and even tunnels for his Thomas the tank engines.

Another great thing for an autistic child is the plain colouring book and crayons. We also buy him colouring pencils and a plain tablet so he can put his words in writing.

We have found the Wii game challenges him and keeps him busy for hours and learning and exercising as they offer many different types of games.

The old board games like Snakes and ladders are also a wonderful game for any child; it helps them with colours and counting. The Hula hoop is still available and will help your child with his motor skills and have fun at the same time.

Another great thing for children that does not cost much at all is yard chalk. I remember the day when I would make a hop scotch on the back garden and play with my friends for hours.

What about jacks and marbles? Did you have as much fun with them as I did? There are so many non-expensive toys for children that they can have fun with and play for hours.

We do try to stay away from the more violent video games as this is not challenging your child in any way and tends to put bad things in their mind that is ok to do in real life what they see on those kinds of games.

So go ahead and buy the new electronic toys but remember to buy some of the not so expensive toys like jacks, backyard chalk, card games like Old Maid and the matching game and even flash cards that will help them with maths.
