This subject probably creates more discussion and disagreement than the debate over golf clubs and golf balls. The popularity and passion of golf can be very intense among players and fans alike.
Who was the first famous golfer?
If we go back in history to 15th century or 16th century Scotland, we will probably find that King James II made a name for himself because he was not a fan of golf. He had the game banned for a short time. But years later another British king lifted the ban and became an avid golfer. Ultimately, the king's citizens began to enjoy playing golf as well and quickly expanded its fame to other villages close by.
Who was the first professional golfer?
The answer to this question may always be in doubt. There are records of some of the gentlemen golfers exchanging money when losing or winning bets on the golf course. Several Scots, including Old Tom Morris, made a living as makers of clubs and balls. Was it the willingness to put down money on a golf game or a skilled tradesman in golf that began to give golf a professional reputation? As more people played golf, the idea of a professional player came later on.
How did golf become so popular in the United States?
In part, the short answer to this is Harry Vardon. A native of the British Isles, Vardon was one of three famous golfers in the late 1800s and early 1900s known as "the great triumvirate". He toured the U. S. playing golf. Some early U. S. golfers traveled to Scotland and Europe and brought back a new enthusiasm for the game. They also returned with new mix of playing styles that only added even more interest to the game.
Who are the great U. S. golfers?
Jack Nicklaus would have to be at the top of any list, along with Tiger Woods. These two golf players consistently display their fine tuned skills on golf coures all around the U.S.
In addition, Walter Hagen was one of the best ever to play. So was the amateur legend Bobby Jones.
More talented golf players can be added to the list of top players, as the game continues to become more popular then ever.
