Abnormal Sweating

Sweating is what our body does on a daily basis. It is normal for use to sweat at times. However it is abnormal for use to sweat excessively for no reason what so ever. Believe it or not but it is quite a common problem, where people sweat excessively for no reason. It can happen with people of all ages and gender. This abnormal sweating problem has been given a medical name and it is known as hyperhidrosis.

An abnormal sweat problem is usually caused by overactive sweat glands. Not only can a sweat problem have the physical affect of sweating but it can also have the emotional effect of making the sufferer feel low in confidence and leave them with no self esteem! Abnormal excessive sweating can also indicate an underlying medical problem. A sweat problem may cause increase possibility of developing skin infection and it definitely increases the smell of sweat on the body.

Sweating can be one of two kinds. It can be localised or generalised.

Localised hyperhidrosis is when an abnormal sweat problem is in one specific location on the body. It may be the hands the face or anywhere people are likely to sweat. When a sweat problem is fixed to one location on the body it is said to be genetic in nature.

Generalised sweating is abnormal sweating that occurs on various parts of the body and not just in the one area. This type of sweat problem is usually to do with some underlying medical problem. This medical problem may be because of undiagnosed diabetes, the menopause or even if the person is obese or even over weight.

Helping Ease this Abnormal Sweating Condition

- You should shower regularly

- Use an antiperspirant deodorant throughout the day

- Wear loose fitting cotton clothes because materials like manmade fibres can cause heat to become trapped between the skin and the material causing you to sweat more.

- Keep your underarms shaved and hair free as hair hang on to more moisture allowing the bacteria on the skin to produce the horrible smell that is associated with sweat!

- Avoid certain foods and drinks that are known to aggravate an abnormal sweat problem. (I.E. any caffeinated drink and spicy foods).

- Using aluminium chloride solution as a desperate measure

- And if all of the above basic methods fail to work, then you may need to consider taking more drastic steps to control the problem, these steps will involve getting surgery done. After all you need to remember that over the counter treatments, are usually only temporary solution, to a long term problem.

Surgery Which Can Be Carried Out

- Thoracic surgery - In this surgery the surgeon operates on the sympathetic chain in the chest that causes abnormal sweating.

- Surgical removal - This where the over active sweat gland is removed

- Iontophoresis - The use of electrical currents to try and eliminate the sweat problem

- Botox - Where ever this injection is injected it put a stop to over active sweat glands. However effects only last for 6-8 months and can be very costly and painful.
