How To Advertise On The Internet

So you want to advertise on the Internet, eh? Smart move. While you and I may take this for granted, the fact remains that thousands of people are still "logging on" the Internet for the first time, every single day. These are still people who are new to the world wide web, forums, blogs, etc. If you run a business or sell a product or service and you're not advertising on the Internet, you are leaving a lot of money on the table. I hope that doesn't offend many, but it's the absolute truth!

Please know that there are so many ways to advertise online, and it would be too difficult for me to adequately cover them all in a single article. So I want to focus on the single best way to advertise on the Internet for the remainder of this article. Again, there are certainly other ways to advertise online--effective ways--but I strongly believe the single best way to advertise on the Internet is to leverage the power of search engines.

Thousands upon thousands of people, every single day, use search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN (and others) to find the information they are looking for. If you could put your website, product, or business in front of their eyes after they search, do you think that could impact your bottom line? You bet it could! So how do you go about getting your web site, product, or service listed in the search engine results pages (or SERPs, as they are known)? There are two main ways.

The first way is to get listed in the "free SERP's" or organic search listings. These are the main results that are returned in the center of your page when you type a keyword into Google, Yahoo, or any other search engine. Getting a listing on the first page of the organic listings has a lot to do with another broad topic called search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is an unbelievably complex topic, but for the purposes of this article, just know that getting your web site listed to the top of the organic listings is a difficult task. It certainly can be done, but it takes much in the way of promotion and time. You basically need a large number of other web sites to link to yours, and not just any web sites, but those in a related field. So for example, if I decide to build a web site on how to lose weight and I want my site to be on the first page of Google's organic listings, I need to get thousands of other web sites to link to mine. This is a gross oversimplification of SEO, but suffice to say that getting links is extremely important. And while no one can argue with free web traffic, it's simply going to take a whole lot of time and effort if you go this route. In fact, if you do a cost benefit analysis, in many cases it is simply not worth the effort when you compare it with the other way to use search engines to advertise.

This "other way" to use search engines to advertise--what I'm saying is the best way to advertise on the Internet--is through the use of pay per click (PPC) advertising. If you've ever search on Google and saw those links on the right side of the page, those are PPC ads. Google's PPC advertising system is known as "AdWords". Here's how it works: Advertisers pays for various different keywords that a person might do a search on. When that word is typed into Google, the advertiser's ad is displayed on the right side of the page. The reason this is so powerful is because it is simple to get listed on the first page of ads. Ad placement with AdWords is a whole topic in and of itself, but generally the more you bid on a keyword the higher position your ad will have. But if you've done your homework--if you have a strong headline, if you have good ad copy, and--most importantly--if you are advertising a product or service that has real value, then using AdWords is going to pay off for you. There is no other way to get your product or service in front of thousands of people so quickly. You can literally sign up for AdWords for $5.00 (USD), create an ad campaign, and receive thousands of new visitors to your web site within an hour or two. If you haven't leveraged the power of AdWords to advertise on the Internet, I can guarantee you are leaving money on the table.

And now for the most important sentence of this article: Get started today. Take action on the words you've read here, and you'll be on your way to a successful Internet advertising campaign! It's so easy to just read these words on you screen and nod your head in agreement but take no action. If you do that, I can guarantee you won't see any success. But if you decide to act, you are putting yourself in a great position to succeed. So get out there and go for it!
