First of all, what are varicose veins?

To put it simply, varicose veins are blood vessels that are enlarged. Although usually found in the legs, varicose veins can also appear in the vulva and rectum. If they appear in the rectum, they are called hemorrhoids and can be quite uncomfortable. For some people, they are simply a bluish spot that appears on their leg.

Why do varicose veins happen more during pregnancy?

Pregnant woman carry a lot of extra weight, and as your pregnancy progresses you may notice that your varicose veins may get worse.

Your pregnancy hormones cause the vein walls to relax.

How can you prevent them?

1. Try wearing elastic support stockings.

2. Avoid tight clothing that constricts your waist, legs or groin.

3. Try not to cross your legs when you sit, because this restricts blood flow. If you can, keep them elevated.

4. Try not to stand for long periods of time. Lie on your side and elevate your legs as much as you can.

5. Wear flat shoes

6. You might want to stick to lower impact exercising like biking or using an elliptical trainer, because high impact exercise can cause trauma to the veins.

7. Eat foods high in fiber. Things like fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. These high fiber foods will help prevent constipation. Constipation is one cause of hemorrhoids.

After pregnancy, the swelling in your veins should go down, but for some it won't disappear completely. If you find that they are still a problem for you, there are a number of different options available.
