If you are planning on a wedding at sea, there are some things you should know. Because ships are registered in various international areas and sail through other areas, there are laws about who can marry people and where. This can vary from ship to ship and sea to sea.

The Captain of the ship usually cannot do the marriage ceremony. Sometimes a notary or a non-denominational minister performs the ceremony. You have the option of providing your own wedding official as long as they have the legal right to perform the ceremony. Different countries and states have different rules and fees for the marriage license itself.

Weddings on board ship by the Captain are available on the Grand Princess, Golden Princess and Star Princess ,since the ships are registered in Bermuda and the ships sail in the Caribbean Sea. In Alaska, Cruise West provided weddings by the Captain in Alaskan waters.

Some cruise ship lines can perform weddings on the ship when it's in port. They are Carnival, Holland/America, Celebrity, Costa, Cruise West, Holland/America and the Norwegian lines.

An on shore wedding is available on Carnival, Windstar, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Disney, Holland/America, the Grand Princess, Sky Princess and Golden Princess, Windjammer, and Norwegian lines.

Most of the cruise lines provide wedding coordinators to help with all the arrangements. Wedding packages can change, so the best resource is the cruise line itself, or an online travel agency that handles most of them. Don't hesitate to ask for the agency or the wedding coordinator's services, that is what they are there for, to help make your dreams come true.
