When a new piece of hardware hits the shops, the temptation for any hardcore gamer is to rush out and buy one straight away to take advantage of the latest games as soon as you can, but with the new Playstation 3 console retailing at a wallet busting £425, should you wait for a price drop before you buy yours?
In the past it has taken developers a while to hit their groove when it comes to producing great games for the Playstation range. With each iteration of Sony's hit games machine, programmers have had to learn a new set of rules in order to take advantage of everything that the machine has to offer.
Also, the price trend with any console is downwards. The price of all consoles has fallen over time, indeed, a PS2, which would have cost around £299 when it first came out could be yours for less than £100 in the run up to Christmas.
The third reason for waiting to buy a new console is that the first few batches are always less reliable than the ones that follow later, and the last thing you want is for your shiny new Playstation 3 to suffer an expensive meltdown before you've even got to grips with it properly.
So, the case for waiting seems pretty tight, if you hang on until Christmas, you'll probably get your console for a hundred quid less, have access to far more games, and get a machine that will be more reliable than ever, but that entirely ignores the point of what this machine is all about.
The Playstation 3 has been more than 5 years in the making, features technology that is a year ahead of the top PCs available at the moment in its all new Cell Processor, and comes ready to connect to an online gaming service that Sony have invested millions of pounds in creating, giving you access to an entirely new Playstation world of online interaction with rivals.
The first wave of games includes titles like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and the acclaimed Resistance, Fall of Man, which has been touted as the game of the year. The audio and visual capabilities of the console have allowed publishers to take these games to the next level in terms of the immersion that they offer, and things are only going to get better.
The bottom line is that the Playstation 3 is out now, and thanks to its quantum leap of technology over its predecessor, it is a worthy purchase at any price for gamers looking to take the next step in home entertainment.
