The Importance of Employment Verifications

A flawed hiring decision may have disastrous consequences for a company. The cost and inconvenience generated by employees who do not have the requisite qualities and credentials, are immense. A poor hiring decision may also undermine the reputation and integrity of the employer.

Job applicants falsify information, a fact that is derived from various studies and research conducted in this field. An estimate maintains the number of fabricated curricula vitae at 36% of the total job applications made each year. Many applicants who furnish rigged information manage to clinch a job. This proves beyond doubt that many organizations lack a robust verification procedure. In some cases, it has been observed that recruitment agencies facilitate the falsification of data to meet targets and increase revenue.

Employment verification is regularly used by employers, headhunters, landlords, banks, brokers, and many more. Organizations which fail to carry out stringent employment checks may end up hiring an employee, who was terminated for violence, theft, use of drugs, fraud, etc. from his/her previous work place. The probability of this employee repeating his/her misdemeanor is high. Employment verification could have made this foreseeable and could therefore be prevented (prevention is better than cure).

There are many reasons for applicants to furnish incorrect information. They may want to hide periods of unemployment, imprisonment, previous designation, and wages and/or dismissal for inappropriate behavior. Such applicants usually portray the job change as deliberate and triggered due to change of address or for career advancement. The only way to distinguish between genuine and fraud applicants is to carry out verifications. Most organizations lack in-house resources to carry out these checks and take the help of professionals. A typical employment verification report usually contains the following information:

Personal details like address, contact number, social security number, etc.
Period of employment.
Job title.
Job description and duties performed.
Additional information like evaluation of the employee conducted by his/her previous employer, reason for leaving and any other information that is deemed relevant.

Employment verification is a small investment that would assist an employer in making an informed choice and prevent unnecessary hassles.
