There may not be a cure for cold sores yet, but there are remedies that can help you relieve the pain and heal this embarrassing infection. Our bodies require some amino acids which is used to make protein that in turn produces the infection fighting antibodies, hormones, body tissues and enzymes. These amino acids are known as lysine and they inhibit the  spread of herpes virus that spreads cold sores. You can get them from eggs, brewer's yeast, wheat germ, cheese, meat etc.

Another remedy is Reishi also known as Ganoderma Lucidum,a mushroom that  has always been used in ancient Asia. It is known to strengthen the immune system and may inhibit the spread of the herpes virus. You can either take it in powder form or supplements which should be taken 600mg once or twice daily. This should be used in conjunction with Astragulus, another herb that is known to improve the immune system.

Lemon balm is said to heal the  fever blisters which are also known as the cold sores within five days. This therefore, shortens the number of days that you are stuck with the sore; usually it takes up to 14 days to heal. You can use them regularly to reduce the frequency that the sores recur. Sunscreen cream or a lip stick with the same could also help heal and reduce the frequency within which the cold sores recurs.

Gel antiperspirant when used at night heals the infection. This is because the antiperspirant dries the sore; the deodorant component has anti-bacterial which makes the sore heal faster and also prevents secondary infections. It is advisable however, to bear in mind that this infection is highly contagious. You should therefore be careful not give it to other people by kissing, sharing utensils and lip balm.
