One of the most frustrating things that anybody can live through is when they tuck themselves in for the night and spend most, if not all of that time, tossing and turning. Insomnia is one of the most common problems facing people of all ages. In this article we're going to cover the causes of insomnia and some natural treatments you can use to that you don't have to resort to harmful drugs. You'll be back to getting a good night's sleep before you know it.

The first thing you have to understand is that if this condition only happens occasionally, it's not insomnia but simple sleeplessness. If it goes on for several weeks or longer, then what you are suffering from is insomnia and it needs to be treated. Sleeping pills though are not the answer.

The stats for people who suffer from insomnia are staggering. It is estimated that there are over 100 million Americans who suffer from insomnia as of this writing. It is also estimated that these 100 million Americans take about 600 million pounds of sleeping pills every year. This is a trend that has to stop.

As to the causes of insomnia, nobody is really quite certain though there are theories that most forms of insomnia are caused by stress, anxiety and even just overeating too close to bedtime. There are also a number of other disorders that can cause insomnia, such as heart and liver problems. Sometimes it doesn't take an awful lot to lose a night's sleep.

Fortunately, there are natural treatments for insomnia so that you don't have to take harmful sleeping pills. And make no mistake about it. Sleeping pills are very harmful. The side effects alone, which include anxiety, depression blurred vision, dizziness and a number of other problems, should be enough to keep people from ever taking another sleeping pill again.

Instead, how about simply adding some calcium to your diet. It is believed that a lack of calcium does contribute to insomnia. Also, try to eat foods that contain tryptophane. This is something that is commonly found in turkey. That's why people get so sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner.

Also, make sure you get enough exercise during the day. Many people who suffer from insomnia don't have very active lives. This makes it more difficult to become tired towards the end of the day.

Finally, avoid foods like pork, cheese and chocolate. Foods or drinks with caffeine are especially bad to have before bedtime. Also avoid all junk foods.

Another thing that is very helpful is to take a hot bath or shower before bedtime. This is very relaxing and will help you sleep a lot better.

By following these simple tips, you should have no trouble getting yourself a good night's sleep and ridding yourself of sleeping pills for good.
