As the BBVA Group Report we discussed in last week's article reveals, members of the human development profession have a lot of work to do to become masters of

marketing their services.

If you are among those professionals who participated in the study, please pull out your personal BBVA Report to determine which of the following three groups you belong to - and what you need to work on to improve your results.

Looking at the entire group of human development professionals surveyed so far, 57 of the 70 would benefit, in varying degrees, from developing a greater level of ABILITY to market themselves. In fact, 34% of the respondents need to work primarily on strengthening their marketing abilities - their knowledge, skill, experience and access to resources. For these individuals, employing the right "DownGrid Maneuvers" is the answer. The four DownGrid Maneuvers are:

1) Normalize - Recognize that what you are experiencing now is something that ALL successful professionals have gone through before. Struggling to find the right message and deliver it in the right way to the right market is a rite of passage in our industry. You are NOT going through anything unusual.

2) Simplify - Focus on identifying and following the easiest, most natural path to the business opportunities you seek. Resist the temptation to take on multiple marketing projects, or projects that are too big, too complicated or too expensive to deploy.

3) Restore Resources - Take a breath. Take a moment. Take an inventory of all of the assets you have amassed throughout your life that could help you to better identify what you're all about, what you have to offer and who you have helped in the past. You are NOT starting from scratch ... and may be surprised with how many resources you have already amassed.

4) Add Resources - Learn what you need to learn or hire someone who already knows what they're doing. Just remember that you don't need to know EVERYTHING ...

you just need to know ENOUGH. Don't let learning become a form of creative avoidance.

While many of the professionals surveyed may need further work on increasing their abilities, 54% need to focus primarily on increasing their level of CHALLENGE. These individuals are NOT applying their abilities to marketing themselves as effectively as they could and are settling, to some degree, for whatever result they're currently getting. For these professionals, "UpGrid Maneuvers" are the route to more business. The four UpGrid Maneuvers are:

1) Increase Standards - Expect more from yourself an... d more from the marketplace! There is ALWAYS a higher level to shoot for and achieve if you decide to go and get it.

2) Change Task - Focus your marketing on a different program or service that you offer. Reposition your marketing so that it targets a more specific audience. Spin your packaging in a way that catches your prospects' eyes. Do something exciting!

3) Awaken Emotions - Remember why your work is so important to you and re-commit yourself to your personal mission. Our industry is THE most powerful earthly force that humanity has to change the world, and to be an instrument of that IS what you were meant to do. Feel that. Believe that. KNOW that.

4) Boost Accountability - Set a goal ... stay on track ... meet your objective. So simple, yet it's the most difficult part of being self-employed. Accountability is about fulfilling your promises to yourself, your family, your friends and business associates. So obligate yourself to do something. Commit yourself to giving your clients something they value. Publish the deadline for the world to see. You WILL get it done.

A small percentage of the speakers, trainers, coaches and consultants who participated in our study actually reported both high ability to market themselves and have positioned themselves to tackle challenging goals. While they appear to be a small group, just 9%, the truth is that almost all participants lack sufficient DRIVE to MAKE their plan work and produce a result NOW. Therefore, the four "OutGrid Maneuvers" help everyone:

1) Increase Risk - No guts, no glory! No pain, no gain! Put up, or shut up! Such a negative way to package such a positive thing. When you find the courage to step into unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations, you gain tangible rewards for yourself AND an increased awareness of your strength. Move beyond yourself - and bring your business with you.

2) Stroke Ego - You ARE an expert. You ARE a gifted communicator. You DO change people's lives. And your history proves it. Remind yourself of who you are and the role that only you can serve in improving the world. Now, go and BE that person.

3) Inspire to Leadership - Our world is suffering from the terrible disease of apathy, and have grown complacent, ambivalent and tired. You and the message you share could be the single experience that re-awakens the masses. First people find their leader, then they find their mission. Help them find YOU and they will find themselves.

4) Provide Coaching - The more successful a person becomes, the more important coaching becomes. It is among the rarest of rare occasions to find someone who, under their own direction, will continue to expand their abilities, increase their challenges and maintain the drive to take them to their highest goals. Ongoing, one-on-one coaching with a knowledgeable and trusted advisor is the difference between being really GOOD and absolutely GREAT.

Depending on exactly where you fall on the ChangeGrid, a very specific combination of ChangeGrid Maneuvers is required to move you to the ideal location for reaching your objective. Your unique formula is shown on the third page of your personal BBVA Report. If you have not completed the BBVA, you can do so for free at MasterStream.com/BBVA.
