Oh Goodie, The Transmission Just Tanked On My Van!

Paul said to "consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials of many kinds" James 1:2 because "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" Romans 8:18.

Paul continued, when you endure hardships and trials in this life, count it a privilege and blessing to be identified with the Savior. Suffering for Him will bring a sure and eternal reward free of any regrets "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness" James 1:2-3.

I don't remember saying, "Oh Goodie, the transmission just tanked on my van"! But as crazy and backwards as that sounds, it's exactly what James asks us to do when it comes to welcoming the problems and trials that come into our lives.

After the initial shock, I knew in my heart that the next few weeks would provide opportunity to grow patience, strengthen my faith by trusting God to provide my needs, test my commitment to tithe, and to use me as an example to new Christians and those in the world that crossed my path, which in turn drew me closer to God.

Today's verses tell us that problems and troubles are going to come. James said "when" we encounter trials, not "if." Everybody has problems. Don't be surprised "when you meet trials of various kinds." Remember, God has promised you His presence in the midst of your trials.

What makes Christians different is the way we handle these challenges. We can joyfully accept hardships and trials because we know that God is going to use them to deepen our faith and strengthen our endurance.

Victory over every trial brings you to a special personal relationship with your Father. And becomes a gift that can be used as a bridge to bring the unsaved to Christ.

We will have many trials and many victories before Christ returns. This provides unique opportunities to serve as a bridge for Christ. And we are expected to use those gifts for His purpose. And when He returns to earth, ". . . he will reward each person according to what he has done". Matthew 16:27
