Diamond drilling is not drilling for diamonds as the phrase would seem to imply; it is drilling with a bit that has been impregnated with industrial diamonds. Diamonds are one of the hardest stones on earth and can even be used to scratch glass. Thus a drill bit that contains diamonds is tough enough to drill through solid rock - and that is where diamond drilling is usually done. Being partly made with diamonds makes these drill bits very expensive, so diamond drilling must be done at a slow rate to preserve the drill bit as much as possible.

The industrial diamonds used in the drilling bit are set within other hard substances such as brass or high-grade steel. Which drill is used in a particular location depends on the hardness of the rock to be drilled. The drill also contains holes that allow water to be delivered to the cutting site deep in the earth.

Water has several benefits; it lubricates the surface to facilitate cutting, it cools the area and it also helps to remove the cuttings or sample rock from the hole. These core samples are retrieved by using a hollow lifter tube that is lowered down through the drill string and then winched out again. The use of a spring at the bottom end prevents the core sample from falling out as it is lifted back up.

Diamond rigs can also be multi combination rigs that can drill in Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling mode as well as diamond drilling mode. This cannot be done at the same time, of course; diamond drilling usually follows RC drilling and is ideal in remote locations where both kinds of drilling are needed; when the first part of the hole is drilled through soft earth and the deeper parts are of solid rock that RC drilling could not penetrate. It saves having to send in two drilling rigs for the one job.
