In the 1800's numerous Indian tribes found that the land where The Avery Ranch clubhouse now sits was a great place to settle, hunt or even stage raids on the white settlers that were beginning to move into Central Texas in larger and larger numbers. Most years ample water was available from Brushy Creek and even in the years of drought the Colorado River was close enough that fetching water from this source wasn't a sever burden. Food was abundant. White tail deer, Javalinas, Probably some bears and the increasing number of settlers supplied their share of meat to supplement the Indians diet. As the settlements became stronger the Indians were force to retreat further and further west but the remoteness of the white settlements, such as Round Rock gave birth to a criminal element that added to Texas being know is "The Wild West". The most notorious of the criminals famous around this area was Sam Bass. It's not know for sure where Sam spent most of his time away from Round Rock but it takes little imagination to see Sam and his buddies camping out along the banks of Brushy Creek or heading down to the Colorado River for a quiet swim in the river while they planned their next "caper".
