Adoption has helped many couples, who for some reason are not able to have a child, realize their dreams. Adopting a child is a major decision with vast emotional issues involved both for the parents and the child. Adoption agencies are of two types basically, private and public. The private adoption agencies are, as the name suggests, privately owned businesses. Private adoption agencies are usually licensed by the state in which they operate. They receive a fee from the adoptive parents. While availing the services of a private agency, it is always recommended that one checks for the license from the state.

Public or state owned adoption agencies are operated by the state in which they are located. They are doing a noble cause by finding homes for children, on whose behalf they have taken up responsibilities. They are usually funded by the tax dollars. You can find scores of public adoption agencies. Most of the services that both private and public adoption agencies offer are common. You can get extensive information through online resources on the locations of private and public adoption agencies. You can also get valuable firsthand information from friends who may have adopted a child previously. Check out the services that are being offered by an adoptive agency. For instance, an agency may have license to offer only certain services like pre-placement home studies, for instance.

Most adoption agencies, whether private or public owned, have their own eligibility requirements. For instance, some agencies require both the parents to be no older than 40 years older than the child they intend to adopt. Many adoption agencies conduct a pre-placement home study to evaluate the adoptive parent's background. Check out whether the agency you are looking at has a pre-placement procedure in place. What a pre-placement home study by an adoption agency means is that they are serious about the child's future and are not willing to risk it for the sake of money. One can also find out whether the actual parents of the child you intend to adopt have signed a "consent to adopt" document. A good adoption agency will never compromise on these procedures.

Although adoption agencies are service oriented, they need money to sustain themselves. An adoption agency may charge you up to $25,000 for their services. One can also find out whether the agency has any religious affiliations. It is important to do some homework before availing the services of a specific adoption agency.
