Nowadays, distance learning is not approached as an unusual educational method anymore. Many traditional universities began integrating distance learning programs into their educational options. Nevertheless, it can be stated that there is a lack of information regarding distance learning. Those who are interested enough in distance learning have the information they need. At the same time, the deficit of information can be seen in those who are not convinced by distance learning yet. In that regard, the present article will attempt to cover the main advantages and disadvantages of distance learning for those who did not form an opinion yet on such teaching system.

Pros

The first advantage of using distance learning as a teaching system can be seen through increasing the number of non-traditional students. Non-traditional, in that regard, is a term that mostly refers to a number of groups that do not fit into the characteristics of most students. Thus, non-traditional students might refer to groups such as elderly people, pregnant women, individuals with full time jobs that have to maintain their own families. It is evident that the individual approach proposed by distance learning provides groups such as the aforementioned with an opportunity to pay for studying in a time and location of their choice.

Cons

The flexibility in time might lead to one of the main disadvantages of distance learning, which is the lack of time. Students might lack the motivation to complete their assignments in a deadline. The fact that the learning process is flexible might lead to delays in submitting completed assignments. The latter, accordingly, results in protracting the duration of the course. The solution to such problem might be seen in a placement session, in which the strengths and weaknesses of each student are assessed, and an approach is chosen for each student, dealing with the problem of motivation.
