Automotive, Factors to Consider when Searching for Car Insurance

There are hundreds of UK insurers all purporting to offer the best car insurance deal for you, but before you sign on the dotted line be sure that you know what you are receiving for your valuable premium pounds.

Most people who are internet savvy will use some sort of comparison website as the first stop on their search for car insurance. The benefit that a comparison site can offer is that you are required to enter your details only once. The search and comparison engine supporting the website will do all the work, drawing together a list of insurers to present to you that are willing to insure you and your vehicle.

But before you get that far you must first be absolutely open and honest to ensure that you are quoted correctly and accurately according to your individual circumstances. For example, drivers who are not entirely truthful about any modifications made to an insured vehicle risk being declared uninsured, should they subsequently have an accident and submit a claim.

Insurers send out assessors who are experts when it comes to knowing whether a car has been modified or not, and will report any modification back to the insurer. Additionally, if you knowingly make a false statement on an insurance application form you could be prosecuted. Any penalty points you may have on your licence should also be declared as they will also affect the level of your premium.

However, once you have truthfully completed your details the most important factor to consider is that the best car insurance for you may not always be the one offering the cheapest premium. When the results are returned from the comparison website the lowest quote is usually given first, but look at the others to check that you are actually comparing like-for-like policies.

Check each for the amount of any compulsory excess and whether there is also an assumed additional voluntary excess in order to achieve such a low quote. An excess is the amount of any claim that you as the policyholder would have to pay.

In addition, does the cheapest car insurance quote offer additional benefits such as recovery and/or repair services in case of breakdown? Some insurers offer them as standard and others charge an additional premium. There are other things that you should consider too, like additional drivers and the level of insurance cover. For example, is it Third Party, Third Party Fire and Theft or Fully Comprehensive that you require?

So, although at first glance the cheapest quote may seem ideal, it may not be the best car insurance for you. Check that you know exactly what you are getting and also that it fits your needs before making any decisions.
