To get the most out of your air conditioner, you need to take care of it. This is particularly true if you have a unit in the window.

When you consider the proper maintenance of your air conditioning unit, one of the factors cited is to cover the outsize unit during the winter. It is also recommended that you remove window air conditioning units and store them during the off season. Air conditioning covers were designed to handle the first circumstance, and eliminate the need for the second. The covers are made of sturdy and weather resistant materials that can stand up to the ravages of wind and cold weather.

The covers that are designed for window units eliminate the need to remove them during the winter. The covers protect the units, and allow them to remain in the window. They also seal up the space around the unit preventing cold air from entering the structure.

A wide variety of materials are used for air conditioner covers. Some are made of commercial grade, heavy duty treated, but non-insulated canvas. Another material used is fully insulated 70% poly and 30% cotton blends. Another accessory that comes with the window unit covers is a set of side panel inserts that can be fitted on the sides of the unit to prevent drafts during winter months.

There is also a large selection of covers available to outside condenser units of split system air conditioners. Most of the suppliers carry covers designed to fit units from all the major suppliers including the new energy efficient SEER 13 and above units that are just now hitting the market. Different materials are used for the outside covers including heavy weight and fleece lined vinyl. It is also possible to have the covers custom made for your own unit insuring a maximum secure fit. These are sometimes necessary when the electrical connections or conduits are connected to the condenser/compressor in an unusual and non-standard method.

There is a large price variation in air conditioner covers. It is possible to get one very cheaply. The protection of the air conditioner during the winter is such an important maintenance consideration that it might be wise to spend a bit more to insure a quality cover. Your air conditioner is a serious investment and protecting would seem the sensible course.
