With all resources available to you, you might well ask, "Why do I need a computer expert for maintaining my computer?" The answer is, you do not. Just like you do not require a technician for fixing your car, repairing your furnace, or doing any other repairs or maintenance. If you have the required knowledge and time, you may easily repair or maintain your computer.

But before you jump to any conclusion, you need to know, that there are numerous potential "gotchas" involved in the maintenance of your computer. In case you decide to fix your automobile, a company will not sell you a carburetor that would break down your car. Unfortunately, that is not true for computer maintenance. There are several programs out there which either do not do what they are supposed to do, perform needless functions, or are simply dangerous to install. It is up to you, to determine which programs you may safely use and in which manner.

In this article, we shall discuss a few programs out there and as to what the do-it-yourselfer requires you to watch out for.

Websites like Double My Speed.com and Finally Fast.com have been heavily promoting themselves of late. These sites along with offer products for downloading and installing that purport for improving the performance of your computer. These programs are usually registry cleaners. Windows registry is just a database which the operating system uses for storing everything it wants to know for running as according to your specifications. In addition, it is available to any program for writing their information in there. Since Windows 95, registry has been a recommended repository for settings, user preferences, and other variables a program needs to remember.

Over a period of time the Windows registry would become cluttered with unnecessary information, most regularly caused by un-installation programs not removing every data they need to. The concept of registry cleaner is that it would detect as well as remove these settings, improving the computer's performance.

The problem with a registry cleaner is that it would usually incorrectly detect a setting as unnecessary and delete it, leading to problems with either the installed programs or the operating system itself. As it is, registry cleaners are nice, but you must never blindly follow their advice in regard to what to delete. So, you must always review every entry to verify that it might be deleted safely.
