Start Making This Your Year

If not now...when? An old Chinese proverb says, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." There is no "woulda", "coulda" or "shoulda", there is only what we have right now. "The past is history, the future is a mystery, now is a gift, that's why it's called The Present."

A magician often tricks us into thinking something happened that didn't. We focus on the trick and we are amazed; until we know the secret, then the trick isn't as amazing. Unfortunately, our behavior is like that of the magician...getting us to think that the conditions, circumstances and our environment are the reasons we are not getting what we believe we can achieve. Our subconscious mind assumes a factual position. Until we can give it reason to believe otherwise, we will continue doing the same things over and over.

The key to making this your year is as simple as deciding that it is your year. We stroll along through our lives thinking, saying and doing things that we have always have. Why? Because we always have! It is, in fact, a vicious cycle. We have to break that cycle to make things different. In order to break the cycle, we have to consciously do something different. Albert Gray said, "The common denominator to success is doing what others aren't willing to do."

Now we get into a whole other area; doing what we want to do rather than doing what we think others think we should do. (You may have to read that a couple of times.) It is none of our business what other people think. They have as much right to "think as they wish" as you do to "do what you wish". One of the most powerful words in the English language is "NO". How often do you find yourself doing what you think "should" be done? Is what you are doing moving you toward your goals and dreams? This leads me into the next part; perception.

How do you perceive your day? How do you perceive the things that happen in your day? Do you act or react? The way we perceive things will determine how we feel about our lives. Think of it this way: things just happen, WE give them meaning. Three men doing a job were asked what they were doing, the first replied, "I'm working" the second said, "I'm digging a ditch" and the third smiled and said, " I am helping to build a canal to bring water to the entire town!" Apparently the third man was very positive and perceived his work as being beneficial and worthwhile.

One of the best ways to continue to make this your year is to give yourself praise for your accomplishments. Most of the time we are so focused on what we didn't get done, that we forget to acknowledge everything that we did. Even if it was smiling at your grumpy neighbor, you still did something positive. Take a positive inventory throughout the day. You'll find that your attitude adjusts accordingly.

People don't resist change, they resist BEING changed. Whenever something is presented to us that is different than anything we have ever experienced, our subconscious is telling us that it is not the way it is supposed to be because our subconscious is using the limited information that we have given it through experience and/or learning. We can open out minds and let the new experience in to allow our subconscious to "catch up" and accept the new way.

You see, it is all up to us. We can make the decision to be, act and feel differently about our lives and everything in our lives. This is the key to making this your year. It is your decision.

Until next time…
