Are the Ugly Betty

It is becoming increasingly apparent that western society has a crazed obsession with beauty it's all about lip gloss, shiny hair, slim physiques and great tans. Many a personal injury claim has resulted from incidents at tanning salons, faulty electrical beauty implements and allergens in hair dyes and various other lotions and potions. But have you ever considered the other side of the coin. Can people really employ the help of personal injury solicitors and make compensation claims for being ugly?

I must be honest, Ugly Betty fuelled my inspiration to write this article. The new US hit comedy portrays the superficial world of high fashion where image is the be all and end all. Betty Suarez is employed to be the new assistant of Daniel Meade by his publishing hot-shot father Bradford Meade when he puts his son in charge of leading fashion magazine, Mode. Bradford is concerned that his son's womanising will get in the way of his work for the magazine and he's positive that Ugly Betty will not tempt Daniel's naughty nature.

Although Betty's enthusiasm and creativity provides the missing link that Daniel needs to make a success of his career and prove himself to his media mogul nemesis, on a superficial level Betty is only recognised as unattractive, freakish and at best a wee bit odd by all the fashionista clones that work for Mode magazine.

She undergoes a variety of cruel tricks from hiding her favourite desk buddy for which she is sent ransom notes to telling her that they will all wear fancy dress costumes to work for Halloween and revelling as she walks around the office dressed as a butterfly while everyone else dons their regular clothing.

Of course America Ferrera who plays Betty spends hours in make-up to come out looking "ugly". But for many people around the world braces, glasses, a plump figure and bushy hair are more of a reality than a comedy creation.

Not only do people that are considered a little bit different take a lot of stick in the office but there have also been many serious cases of bullying in schools and colleges reported in the papers. When it comes to bullying people who look a little different, whether they are a different colour, they weigh a few extra pounds or they do not follow the latest fashion trends, there are two distinct types: the physical and the mental.

Physical abuse may include being tripped up in the corridor, having your pigtails pulled in the playground or leaving your work colleague a nasty surprise of drawing pins on their seat. For all of which you may have good grounds to pursue personal injury claims, particularly if a health and safety violation has been breached.

Then there are the classic mental acts of torture. You may have fallen victim to malicious emails and whisperings, hate-websites lovingly created by your co-workers or fellow pupils, or having the tyres of your car or bicycle let down which could potentially lead to you having a road accident where you sustain serious personal injuries.

Making a compensation claims for psychological personal injuries may be less straightforward than that of a physical personal injury claim. Quite often it comes down to your word against the word of another. In cases where you have suffered bullying at the hands of a manager or a teacher it may be quite difficult to find a witness who will actually stand up and verify your case and some personal injury solicitors are less reluctant to take on such cases as a result.

There is also the potential for those that have suffered cruelty as a result of the way they look to make compensation claims against their parents for their misfortunes. We know that our friends across the pond will claim for almost anything. They seem to possess no qualms about divorcing their parents at the drop of a hat so what would stop them making personal injury claims against their moms and dads after suffering malice as a result of the size of their nose or because of an excessive weight problem? Your guess is as good as ours.
