Servicing about 24 million passengers per year, Stansted now ranks as the third-busiest airport in the UK. It flies to 160 destinations in 34 countries, almost all of which are in Europe, and has emerged as the main budget airline hub in the UK in the past decade, receiving flights from major low-cost carriers like easyJet and Ryanair.

If you're one of the increasing numbers of passengers coming through Stansted, you can expect a terminal that has developed infrastructure to meet the needs of the modern traveller. There is the usual selection of airport lounges and a huge number of retail outlets selling everything from sportswear, electronics to luxury food items and the ubiquitous liquor and cigarettes duty-free shops. Restaurants and cafés include the likes of Pret a Manger, Starbucks and O'Neill's Irish pub serving meals and drinks all day.

Business-wise, Stansted International Airport is well-equipped. The whole terminal offers wireless internet on three different networks for those that already have accounts; simply enter your password and connect instantly. There are also T-Mobile recharging stations if your laptop runs out of power and there are internet terminals available before check-in and in Departures. Banking and currency changing facilities are available throughout Departures and Arrivals including ATM machines operated by a number of British banks.

If you are arriving late or departing early, you might be looking for accommodation in or close to the airport. Stansted offers three hotels within its confines: Hilton National Hotel, Radisson SAS Hotel and Express Holiday Inn, as well as many more very close by. The three on-site hotels can be booked online in advance and there is a shuttle bus service to and from the terminal building for guests staying at the Hilton and the Express.

Most passengers will either be coming from or heading to the centre of London as part of any flight via Stansted. Transport options at Arrivals are numerous including car hire and trains and buses to a host of destinations in the city. Online Stansted airport hire autos
