The cables needed to connect your HDTV to various devices depend on the kinds of outputs these devices have. Incoming signals from these devices to the television are broken up into audio (what you can hear through the speakers) and video (what you can see on the screen).

There are lots of places to plug things in on the side and back of an HDTV, what gets used is totally dependent on which components are being used with the system. The newer the component is will generally help it to provide a better output. HDTV's generally have an HDMI input if they were manufactured after 2006, this will carry an HD signal from the source, usually cable box or DVD, to the TV. If you're hooking up a Blu ray player you want to use a HDMI cable because the quality will be so much better.

You want to always use an HDMI cable if at all possible because they provide the very best quality picture for you. There are HDMI cables which can run more signal per second and these provide the very best quality, for a little more money, but it's worth it.

Some of your components may not have a output for HDMI, in that case there will be color coded ouputs with labels to help guide you. You'll find a red, green and blue input which corresponds with the colors on the connector heads. Then you'll have white and red inputs for sound, these included with the component cable means you'll have five cables for each end of the connection process.

What's great about the HDMI, besides better signal transmission, is that it replaces all five of those cables, which also helps clean up the connection area. If the component doesn't have even component cable ability there will be composite inputs with the colors, yellow, white and red. Acquire a composite cable and line up all the colors, yellow does video and the red and white are the sound. If there is an S video output on the DVD or cable box then an S video cable can also be used and this will give a video upgrade.

There are a lot of home theater setups using the HDMI cable these days. You can find it and any other connectors you need at Ugly Cable. Go to uglycable.com right now, they have representatives available if you need help.
