What is Roulette?

Roulette game is named after a French word which means "small wheel". Blaise Pascal, a French scientist was the inventor of the roulette device who said that he was fascinated by perpetual motion devices. The first version of roulette was seen in the 17th century. The game became very popular in Paris and in 1842, wishing to obtain a better house advantage, Francois and Louis Blanc invented the roulette wheel with a single ‘0'.

Roulette is a game which is mostly played and enjoyed as the game of chance. Roulette is the oldest and famous game played in the casinos.

The objective of playing this game is to pick the winning number that will appear on the roulette wheel.

The basic ways to learn how to play roulette and understand what are the chances to win this game.

1. There are two types of wheels in this game:

One wheel which contains 37 slots, numbered from 0 to 36.
Another wheel contains 38 slots, numbered from 0 to 36 and has added with extra number "00".

The wheel with 37 slots is the original wheel since the game is invented. This wheel is known as "European Wheel". The 38 slot's wheel is known as "American Wheel".

2. The table layout of roulette:

There are two betting areas in Roulette layouts:

The inside betting area: This contains individual numbers on the layout. These individual numbers are arranged in 3 columns and 12 rows. The zero and double zero are arranged at the top of the columns. In this 18 numbers are colored with "black"/"yellow" and the rest 18 are colored with "red". The player can make several types of betting; they can bet a number straight up or include the line between numbers to select a combination of numbers.

The payments for each type of betting in inside area are as follows:

Single Number : Pays 35 to 1.
Split between two numbers: Pays 17 to 1.
Quad between 4 numbers (place your chip at the center of 4 adjacent numbers): Pays 8 to 1.
Double street bet (you bet on 2 rows with 6 numbers): Pays 5 to 1.
Line bet / street bet (you bet on 1 row with 3 numbers): Pays 11 to 1.

The outside betting area: This area has boxes for the columns, red/black and odd or even or different groups of numbers. In this area the betting is based on the colors. In this there are three types of betting 1-18 (small), 19-36 (big); odd or even; column bets: 1 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36.

The payments for each type of betting in outside area are as follows:

Even/odd, big/small and color black/red are all pay 1 to 1.
Column bets (1 to 12, 13 t o24, 25 to 36) are paying 2 to 1.

After the roulette ball drop into the wheel's slot, the dealer will mark the winning number with a marker. Then the dealer will pick up all the losing chips first before paying out the winning chips. The player is not allowed to place his bet until the dealer removes the marker.

Roulette has a high house edge and the player cannot overcome this edge in the long run. But if the player puts some strategies in place, he can increase the chance to win in this game.
