Are You Drinking Water From a Tap?

Don't get me wrong but water from a tap is not as good as it it could be. Sure, it's safe and all that but when I noticed my own water had a slightly metallic taste to it and smelt a bit like my pool water I thought it was time to do some homework. This article will briefly explore some of these concerns and suggest what can be done.

Whilst it's easy to generalize about this topic I can only comment on my own area but it's nothing unusual and could be considered as a typical example. It's also true to say that how many of us really know the source of our drinking water and even less about the journey it takes from beginning to its end destination, our homes. A great many things can happen to affect it's purity and cleanliness.

You may think that it's hard to find out about the quality of your own water but not really, as each supply company is mandated to produce a water quality report on an annual basis. Much can be gleaned from this such as if there had been any problems in the past with pollutants and contaminant threats to the water supply. The two areas of private concern  for me are the issue of the use of Chlorine in water disinfection during the treatment process and some studies that have shown how certain drugs are finding their way into our drinking water. Let's look briefly at Chlorine.

Why use it? Well, it's by far the most economic way of killing off the water borne bacteria that pose a health threat to us if they were left behind. Good in one way but the other side of the argument is that tiny, residual amounts still appear in water from a tap. We should be concerned as this toxic chemical, even at such very low levels is being linked by water experts to some of the most serious life-threatening illnesses around. The purpose here is not to alarm but to educate, so I will not be mentioning any specific diseases. So, what's the big deal about drugs in our water?

Put simply, If they are there and there is plenty of emerging proof of this, then I do not know what the long term future effect is in relation to me and my family.  Even evidence from former health industry workers suggests that the disposal of unwanted or old medication is performed routinely via simply flushing it down the toilet. When you consider the amount of medical facilities on a national scale it brings it home.

Some food for thought and there are pro-active steps we can take, if we are so inclined to do, to mitigate or even eliminate such concerns.
